History and Seight Seeing
The first settlement in KAYA KOY belonged to the Lycian
civilization (2500 years old). This town was called
KARYMLASSOS.
So beautiful
is the Karmylassos (Kayakoy), so rich the soil, so
tranquil the air and so slow the pace of traditional rural
life, that, it is hard to believe the bustling Fethiye and
famous Olu Deniz beach are only a short drive away. The
dreamlike beauty of Kaya Valley is magnified by the
evocative ruins of the abandoned Greek village of the same
name.
KAYAKOY was predominantly
Greek until 1923. The majority of Greeks lived on the
mountain side where as the Turks lived on the plateau. They
lived together for hundreds of years until the population
exchange in 1923. There are 3500 stone houses, chapels,
girls and boys schools, 2 churches ( panaghia Pyrgiotissa
and Tarsiyarhis). Since tourism came to Kaya it has been
called the “ Ghost Village”
