Once one of the richest and most powerful small kingdoms in the Middle East
Pergamum
was first inhabited in 8000 BC, but the city's brightest period was following
the death of Alexander the Great. At the height of its power, Pergamum
was the capital of a kingdom that comprised most of Western Anatolia. It
was the center of culture in the area during the Hellenistic period. During
the reign of Eumenes II, who had very close relations with the Roman Empire,
the city became a very famous cultural center. Most of the beautiful buildings
at the site, such as the library, which was the second largest library
of the period housing 200.000 volumes and the Altar of Zeus are from this
period. In terms of architecture and sculpture, Pergamum was the leading
center of its time.
The "golden age" came to an end when the last Pergamum king who had
no son, asked for help from the Roman Empire. Pergamum became a Roman province
in 129 BC.
The most important structure at Pergamum is the Asclepieum, one of the most famous shrines and therapeutic centers in the classical world. This is also the place where the symbol of medicine originates.

When
you take a tour in this famous ancient site, the Library, which
was the second largest library in the ancient world. It was looted and
taken to the Egypt Library by Marc Anthony, who was in love with Cleopatra,
the ruins of the Altar of Zeus, one of the seven wonders according
to so many people and the theater, one of the most impressive monuments
in Anatolia will be among the highlights of your visit.
We don't recommend a tour to Pergamum as one-day tour. It is better
if you could combine this tour with another tour.
